Removing General Carpet Adhesive From Oak Floors

Several types of carpet adhesive are used to secure carpeting to wood floors. If you decide to remove your carpeting and restore the oak flooring underneath, you will also need to remove the left-behind carpet adhesive. General carpet adhesive is yellowish in color, and it must be removed in a way that does not damage the surface of your oak flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat the general carpet adhesive with a heat gun so that it becomes pliable.

    • 2

Scrape the general carpet adhesive off of the oak floor with a plastic putty knife. Metal putty knives will scratch the wood.

    • 3

Open several windows in the room with the oak floors. Apply an adhesive remover to any general carpet adhesive remaining on the floor.

    • 4

Scrub the area lightly with a soft bristle brush to lift up the remaining general carpet adhesive.

    • 5

Wash the oak floor as you normally would to remove any lingering chemicals.
