Fixing Cracks in Old Wood Stairs With Caulk

Cracks occur often in old wooden stairs, especially if they experience a high degree of foot traffic. These cracks compress and expand under continued foot traffic, which will eventually widen the crack and destroy that portion of the stairs. Cracks like these can be repaired -- at least for a while -- through the application of a caulking compound which prevents the cracks from compressing too much and provide extra support when the crack encounters traffic.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Tape the edges around the crack with masking tape. This will prevent any caulk from spilling over onto the rest of the wood stair.

    • 2

Fill the crack with caulk, then scrape away any excess caulk with a plastic putty knife.

    • 3

Wait for the caulk to dry, then remove the masking tape.
