Floodwater is often contaminated, and contact with it may lead to illness from E. coli, hepatitis A and tetanus, among other conditions. Mosquitoes may breed in floodwater, increasing the risk of West Nile virus.
Protective gear is an essential part of a flood cleanup supply kit. This includes goggles, boots and rubber gloves. If floodwater rises above your boots, wear waterproof pants or overalls.
Turn off the electricity at your home's main breaker. If the American Red Cross is operating in your area, contact the organization for free cleaning supplies or information on flood cleanup procedures. Boil water or disinfect it with bleach to use to wash your hands before eating and when stopping cleanup for the day.
Your flood cleanup kit should include a bucket, mop, broom, trash bags, scrub brushes and sponges. You need bleach, liquid laundry detergent, all-purpose disinfectant cleaner and antibacterial dishwashing liquid.
Keep children and pets away from floodwater. Wash flood cleanup clothing separately. If an item is moldy or you cannot wash or disinfect it, throw it out.
