How to Remove Water Stains in Basements

Because it is highly porous, concrete becomes discolored when moisture condenses on its surface for any length of time. These stains may contain mineral deposits or rust and can prove difficult to remove. Before removing the stain, repair any cracks in the foundation where moisture may be seeping in, advises the Michigan State University Extension. Paint or seal concrete to prevent future water intrusion and staining.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2 to 4 tbsp. of trisodium phosphate with 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a stiff brush in the solution.

    • 2

Wash the stains thoroughly and rinse. Air dry. Trisodium phosphate removes mildew, hard-water marks and rust.

    • 3

Mix 1 cup of oxalic acid to 10 cups of hot water to treat water stains that are red or brown, indicating they contain rust. Don rubber gloves and protective eyewear because oxalic acid is highly corrosive.

Dip the scrub brush in the acid mixture and clean the water stains. Rinse and air dry.
