How to Connect a Phone Ground to a Breaker Panel

Properly grounding your telephone wiring will ensure your lines do not burn out and possibly burn your telephones. Depending on local building code, you will need to ground your phone line to the breaker panel. In most cases, your phone company will perform this task. However, if you live in an area where the building code does not require the phone line to be grounded, you may need to ground it yourself. All you need is the right supplies and to follow directions.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip off about half an inch from each end of the grounding-wire insulation jacket with the wire stripper.

    • 2

Slip the wire clamp over the grounding bar underneath the breaker panel. Place one of the stripped ends of the grounding wire between the grounding bar and the wire clamp. Secure the wire in place by tightening the wire clamp with the screwdriver.

    • 3

Open the phone box with the screwdriver. Some phone boxes can be opened only by the phone company using a special key.

    • 4

Place the other end of the grounding wire to the grounding screw on the inside of the telephone box. Secure the wire in place with the screwdriver. The grounding screw can be identified sometimes by its green color. Other times it is more difficult and you will need to read the manual for the box. Your phone box is now grounded to the breaker panel. All lines connected to the box will be grounded as well.
