Asphalt siding has been in use for decades but has recently fallen in popularity, with the growing preference for aluminum and vinyl siding. Nevertheless, asphalt siding is a time-honored and highly effective method for protecting the exterior walls of your home. Installation is simple and straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all existing siding from the area in preparation for the new asphalt siding. If there is any rot or damage to the underlying plywood, repair it by cutting out the damage and patching. Be sure to remove all nails and other objects that might pierce the asphalt siding.

    • 2

Starting at the bottom of the wall, place the sheets of siding against the wall and nail them into place along the top edge. Do not allow the installed sheets to rest against the ground. Provide a minimum of 6 inches between the ground and the asphalt sheets.

    • 3

Nail additional panels in place, completing one run of panels horizontally across the wall before beginning the next run up. Overlap panels by 2 to 3 inches. Stagger the runs so that the joints between panels do not occur in a vertical line.
