How to Check the Voltage in a TV

The voltage in a TV is transmitted from the electrical outlet to the TV set. The TV itself does not produce voltage, but it requires a certain voltage to be supplied by an outlet for it to work correctly. The standard home electrical outlet is 110 to 120 volts. To make sure that your outlet is projecting the correct voltage to your TV, you will need to test it.

Turn the knob on the face of the multimeter with your hand until the mark or protruding piece on the knob aligns with the expected AC voltage of your outlet. In this case, you should turn the knob to anywhere from 110 to 120 volts.

Place the two probes of the multimeter into the holes of the outlet. The probes are the wires that extend from the multimeter. One probe should go in each outlet. Do not put either of probes in the ground hole of the outlet. That hole, if it exists, is round. The holes that you will use are rectangular in shape.

Read the face of the multimeter to see the test results of the outlet's voltage. The needle on the face of the multimeter will align with the marker that equals the voltage output of the outlet. This is the voltage that will run through your TV.
