How to Insert a Cable Into a Jacket

Assembling Ethernet cables may not be an everyday activity, but making your own cables can come in handy when you need an extra cable or two for your local area network. When assembling an Ethernet, or CAT5/CAT6, networking cable, the main wiring must fit into plastic tubing called a jacket. The jacket is the thick, plastic insulation protecting the internal wire from damage. Inserting the cabling into the jacket can be tricky, as it is a tight fit inside the jacket.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the eight wires needed to assemble the Ethernet cable. Pair a white wire to an orange wire; a white wire to a green wire; a blue wire to a white wire; and a brown wire to a white wire.

    • 2

Grasp each pair of wires individually. Use a pair of pliers to twist each pair of wires together. Make sure the wires are twisted together as tight as possible without damaging each wire's insulation.

    • 3

Lay the cable jacket out on a large, flat work surface. Cut a piece of twine the length of the cable jacket. Fish the twine through one end of the jacket until the twine appears through the opposite end of the jacket. Tie that end of the twine to one end of a wire pair.

Grasp the opposite end of the twine and pull the wire pair through the cable jacket. Repeat this to fish each wire pair through the cable jacket.
