How to Make Electrical Outlets With a Jumper

## How to Make Electrical Outlets With a Jumper

Required Materials:

- 2-Pronged outlet

- 3-Pronged outlet

- Jumper wire

- Wire stripper/cutters

- Screwdriver

- Electrical tape

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Safety First

- Turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on from your breaker panel.

- Use a voltage tester to ensure no live current is present in the outlet box before proceeding.

Step 2: Remove Existing Outlet

- Remove the cover plate of the existing two-pronged outlet using a screwdriver.

- Unscrew the outlet from the electrical box and disconnect the wires.

Step 3: Connect Jumper Wire

- Attach the jumper wire to the black wire (typically the "hot" wire) of the two-pronged outlet.

- Secure the jumper wire using wire nuts.

Step 4: Connect Neutral Wire

- Connect the white wire (neutral wire) from the two-pronged outlet directly to the white wire of the three-pronged outlet using a wire nut.

Step 5: Connect Ground Wire

- Connect the green or bare copper grounding wire from the three-pronged outlet directly to the grounding screw of the electrical box.

Step 6: Connect Grounding Jumper Wire

- Connect a separate grounding jumper wire (if provided) from the three-pronged outlet to the jumper wire you installed earlier (the wire nut joining the black and white wires).

Step 7: Secure the Outlet

- Tuck any excess wires neatly into the electrical box.

- Secure the three-pronged outlet to the electrical box using the provided screws.

Step 8: Replace Cover Plate

- Replace the cover plate you removed earlier and ensure it's securely fastened.

Step 9: Restore Power

- Restore power to the circuit from the breaker panel.

- Test the new three-pronged outlet with a plug-in device to ensure proper functionality.

Step 10: Safety Check

- Double-check all your connections to ensure there's no exposed wiring.

- Clean up the work area and dispose of any scraps or debris responsibly.

Important Notes:

- Always consult local electrical codes and regulations before attempting any electrical work.

- If unsure about any step, it's best to seek professional help from a qualified electrician.
