Tools and Materials Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Allen key set
- Strut spring compressor
- New struts (front and rear)
- Strut mounting hardware
- Replacement coil springs (if necessary)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Vehicle:
- Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Allow the engine to cool down completely if it has been running.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels that will need to be removed to access the struts (typically the front wheels).
2. Raise the Vehicle:
- Use a jack to raise the front of the vehicle until the tires are about 6 inches off the ground.
- Place jack stands under the vehicle for safety, making sure they are placed on a solid part of the frame.
- Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
3. Remove the Wheels:
- Use a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels that will provide access to the struts.
4. Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link:
- Locate the stabilizer bar link connecting the strut to the stabilizer bar.
- Use an Allen key to loosen and remove the bolts securing the link to the strut.
5. Remove the Brake Caliper:
- Remove the brake caliper bolts and carefully remove the caliper from the rotor.
- Suspend the caliper out of the way using a piece of wire or string to prevent it from damaging the brake line.
6. Compress the Strut Spring:
- Install the strut spring compressor onto the strut spring, following the tool's instructions.
- Tighten the compressor until the spring is compressed enough to safely remove the upper strut mount bolts.
7. Remove the Upper Strut Mount Bolts:
- Locate and remove the bolts securing the upper strut mount to the vehicle's body.
- Be careful not to drop the bolts into the engine bay.
8. Remove the Strut Assembly:
- Once the upper strut mount bolts are removed, carefully remove the entire strut assembly from the vehicle.
9. Transfer Components (Optional):
- If you are not replacing the strut itself, you may need to transfer components such as the upper mount and spring from the old strut to the new one. Follow the disassembly and reassembly steps carefully to ensure proper installation.
10. Install the New Strut:
- Insert the new strut assembly into the vehicle.
- Reinstall the upper strut mount bolts, making sure to tighten them securely.
11. Install the Brake Caliper:
- Reattach the brake caliper to the rotor and reinstall the caliper bolts.
12. Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link:
- Reinstall the stabilizer bar link to the strut, tightening the bolts securely.
13. Remove the Spring Compressor:
- Release the strut spring compressor slowly and carefully, ensuring it is fully decompressed before removing the tool.
14. Reinstall the Wheels:
- Reinstall the wheels that were removed and tighten the lug nuts securely.
15. Lower the Vehicle:
- Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and carefully remove the jack stands.
Remember that replacing struts is a complex task and requires proper tools, knowledge, and attention to safety. If you are not confident in your abilities or do not have the necessary tools, it's best to consult with a qualified mechanic.
