- Insulation (fiberglass batts or cellulose)
- Vapor barrier (6 mil polyethylene sheeting)
- Strapping (1x4s or 2x4s)
- Nails or screws
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
- Level
- Staple gun
Instructions:
1. Install the vapor barrier. Roll out the vapor barrier over the exposed beams of the roof. Start at the bottom of the roof and work your way up. Overlap the sheets of vapor barrier by 6 inches and tape the seams together.
2. Install the strapping. Nail or screw the strapping to the beams of the roof, perpendicular to the vapor barrier. The strapping should be spaced 16 inches apart.
3. Install the insulation. Cut the insulation to fit between the beams of the roof. Place the insulation between the strapping and the vapor barrier.
4. Finish the insulation. Staple the vapor barrier to the strapping to hold the insulation in place. Trim any excess vapor barrier.
Tips:
- Be sure to wear safety glasses and a dust mask when working with insulation.
- If you are using fiberglass batts, wear gloves to protect your hands from the fiberglass fibers.
- When installing the vapor barrier, be sure to overlap the sheets by at least 6 inches and tape the seams together. This will help to prevent moisture from getting into the insulation.
- When installing the insulation, be sure to cut it to fit snugly between the beams of the roof. This will help to prevent heat from escaping.
