How to Remove Varnish From Detailed Wood

If you are refinishing a piece of wood you'll need to dissolve the layer of varnish. While the sanding process will remove the layer of varnish, you may not want to sand the piece if it is too detailed for you to feel confident sanding. Instead, use a solvent that will dissolve the varnish and use several tools to ensure that you access all areas of the wood. Work in a well-ventilated area to prevent irritation from the solvent fumes, and keep children away from the area while you are working.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on gloves, goggles and a dust mask to protect yourself from the caustic paint stripper.

    • 2

Dip a paintbrush into the paint stripper.

    • 3

Apply the paint stripper to the detailed wood. Apply it in dollops and press it into the wood with the tips of the bristled brush. Apply a thick layer of paint stripper.

    • 4

Work the paint stripper into the small details with a small detail brush.

    • 5

Work until the paint begins to bubble up. This could take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

    • 6

Scrape the paint off the larger areas of the wood with a paint scraper. Do not scrape the paint stripper off before it begins to bubble the paint.

    • 7

Scrape the paint off small, detailed areas of wood with a piece of steel wool, a toothbrush or a toothpick.
