A DIY Table Top for a Radial Arm Saw

The radial arm saw is designed with a sacrificial work table. The radial arm saw blade is pulled through the material and cuts into the work table slightly as it is being used. After prolonged use, the sacrificial worktable becomes damaged and needs to be replaced with a new one. Using hand tools you can replace the sacrificial worktable with a piece of medium density fiberboard in a short time without too much trouble.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Medium density fiberboard
  • Pencil
  • Eye protection
  • Electric drill
  • Drill bits
  • Circular saw

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the radial arm saw from the power source.

    • 2

Raise the radial arm saw to its highest position by turning the hand crank in a clockwise direction. This will give you access to work on the table top.

    • 3

Disassemble the radial arm saw's sacrificial table. The table consists of three parts, a spacer board, a replaceable fence and a sacrificial tabletop. The spacer board clamps the replaceable fence in place with a pair of winged bolts. Use the socket wrench to remove the nuts and bolts attaching the sacrificial table to the radial arm saw frame.

Place the old sacrificial table on top of a piece of fiberboard. Use a pencil to trace the outline of the old table on the fiberboard and mark the location for the bolt holes. Put on your eye protection. Use an electric drill with the appropriate drill bit and drill the new top for the nuts and bolts that will attach the top to the radial arm saw frame. Use the circular saw to cut the fiberboard to size by cutting along the pencil lines marked on the new top.

      Reassemble the tabletop.
