Do-It-Yourself Thermal Foil Refacing

Thermal Foil also referred to as "thermofoil" or "thermafoil" is a type of covering used for MDF cabinets and furniture. Thermal foil is virtually identical to laminate veneers, aside from the way they are adhered to MDF during manufacturing, so refacing thermal foil is just as easy as refacing laminate cabinets and furniture. It's the cheap option for giving your furniture a facelift and all it takes is some contact paper, steady hands, and a free weekend.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the cabinets using a screwdriver, to make the application of the contact paper as easy as possible.

    • 2

Measure the pieces of the furniture with a measuring tape, to ensure that you make the proper cuts on the contact paper.

    • 3

Cut the contact paper using a sharp utility knife, according to the measurements taken earlier. Place a cutting board under the contact paper before cutting, to prevent any damage to your cutting surface.

    • 4

Remove the backing and apply the contact paper to the surface of the furniture, starting at a corner and slowly moving diagonally across.

    • 5

Roll out any bubbles created on the surface of the paper using a rubber brayer, then reconstruct the furniture.
