How to Hang a Curtain in an Open Kitchen Ceiling

Open ceilings add an expansive feeling by increasing the height of the room. Some open ceilings are flat with exposed beams while others follow the roof peak. In kitchens, open ceilings produce a few challenges such as an exposed oven exhaust, freestanding upper cupboards and--if you have a full height wall, door or windows--curtain placement is challenging. The simplest solution is hanging a cafe rod, which does restrict you to cafe or pocket curtains and requires a bit of carpentry skill.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Hardwood boards, 1-by-4-inches
  • Saw
  • Cafe rod
  • Drill with hole cutting bits
  • 120- and 200-grit sandpaper
  • Level
  • Phillips head drill bit
  • Cafe rod curtain clips

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut three 6-inch-long curtain rod supports from the 1-by-4-inch hardwood board.

    • 2

Determine if the finial on the cafe rod is removable. If you can remove the finial, find the hole cutter which easily slips over the rod and install it on the drill. If the finial can't be removed, select the hole cutter which fits over the finial.

    • 3

Read the size of the hole bit and divide the size in half to get the radius of the bit. Add a 1/2 inch to the radius and measure that distance from one end of the 6-inch-long curtain rod support and make a line. Measure the short side of the curtain rod support, divide that distance in half and use that measurement to find the middle of the curtain rod support; make another mark forming an X. Repeat for the other two curtain rod supports.

    • 4

Put the center bit of the hole cutter on the X, holding the bit perpendicular to the curtain rod support. Put pressure on the other end with the palm of your hand to prevent the board from spinning and drill a hole through the board. Repeat for the rest of the supports.

    • 5

Sand the edges of curtain rod supports first with 120-grit sandpaper, removing all the slivers and rough spots. Once you remove the rough spots, use the 200-grit sandpaper to finish the sanding.

    • 6

Locate the beam directly over one end of where you want to hang the curtain. Measure 3 inches from the wall and 1 inch from the bottom edge of the beam and make a mark. Hold one curtain rod support against the side of a beam. Insert a screw through the support into the beam. Repeat for the other end of the rod.

    • 7

Slip the third curtain rod support over the cafe curtain rod, and then slide each end of the curtain rod through one of the supports already installed against the beam. Locate the beam that's closest to the center of the rod and attach the third support to the beam with a screw.

    • 8

Attach the cafe curtain clips to the cafe curtain. Slide one end of the cafe rod out of the support and slip half the cafe curtain clips over the rod before reinserting the rod into the support. Repeat for the other side.
