How to Add Brick to a Concrete Block House

Concrete is sturdy but not always very attractive. A brick facade on a concrete house is often considered more attractive and will have more curb appeal. Since the brick isn't a structural necessity, use a brick veneer rather than a full-sized brick. This will save you money and will be easier to install. Full-sized bricks are more expensive and also more difficult to work with because of their weight.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the concrete well with a power washer. Get all the grit and dirt off the house before adding mortar. Allow the house to dry.

    • 2

Lay your brick veneers nearby so that you have easy access to them.

    • 3

Apply mortar to the back of your first brick veneer using a tuck point trowel, and a little more mortar onto the wall where you plan to position the brick.

    • 4

Press the brick veneer into the wall. Mortar should squeeze out the edges from behind the brick. Repeat this for the next brick in the row, until the row is fully attached.

    • 5

Scrape excess mortar from the joints with a trowel.

    • 6

Repeat step 4 until the next course has been attached to the wall. Continue this down the wall, and then start on other areas of the house where you would like to apply the brick veneer.

Wait for the mortar to cure for one week before washing down the walls with a hose and scrubbing the walls with a stiff brush to get the excess mortar off the brick.
