How to Build an Electric Pottery Wheel

Tools and Materials:

* Electric Motor: 1/2 horsepower or larger, with a speed of at least 1750 RPM.

* Motor Mount: A sturdy platform to mount the motor to.

* Wheel Head: A round, flat disk that will be attached to the motor shaft.

* Drive Belt: A belt that will connect the motor to the wheel head.

* Pulley: A wheel attached to the motor shaft that will drive the belt.

* Speed Control: A device to control the speed of the motor.

* Foot Pedal: A pedal that the potter will use to control the speed of the wheel.

* Wiring: Electrical wire to connect the motor to the speed control and foot pedal.

* Tools: A drill, screwdriver, wrench, pliers, and a saw.

Step 1: Construct the Motor Mount:

1. Cut a piece of plywood or MDF to the desired dimensions for the motor mount.

2. Attach the motor to the mount using bolts and nuts.

Step 2: Attach the Wheel Head:

1. Attach the wheel head to the motor shaft using a coupling or a set screw.

2. Make sure the wheel head is securely fastened to the motor shaft, as it will need to withstand a lot of force when the potter is throwing clay.

Step 3: Install the Drive Belt:

1. Loop the drive belt around the pulley on the motor shaft and the wheel head.

2. Adjust the tension of the belt so that it is tight but not too tight.

Step 4: Connect the Speed Control:

1. Connect the electrical wire from the motor to the speed control.

2. Connect the speed control to the foot pedal.

Step 5: Power Up:

1. Make sure the foot pedal is in the "off" position.

2. Turn on the power supply for the motor.

3. Press the foot pedal to start the wheel spinning.

4. Adjust the speed control to the desired speed.

Step 6: Test the Wheel:

1. Place a piece of clay on the wheel head and use your hands to shape it.

2. Experiment with different speeds and techniques to get a feel for the wheel.

3. Make sure the wheel is stable and does not wobble.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Pottery Wheel:

1. Once you are comfortable using the wheel, start creating your pottery.

2. With a little practice, you can create beautiful and unique pieces of pottery.
