Supplies for Reed Diffusers

A reed diffuser is a decorative home fragrance product. It consists of essential or fragrance oils in a glass vase or jar filled with reeds. The reeds absorb the oil and then emit the fragrance into the surrounding area. Reed diffusers are readily available at home decor and department stores. However, it's easy enough to make your own. The materials--jars or vases, oils and reeds--can now be found online and in some home decor stores.
  1. Glass Container

    • The first item you will need to make you own reed diffuser is a glass container to put the oil and reeds in. The jar or vase should have a narrow neck for the reeds to sit in. The size and type of the jar depends on your needs and decor preferences. You should, however, use a container with a narrow-neck opening so the reeds can rest on it and allow the oil to wick up.

    Oil

    • Essential or fragrance oils are needed to make a reed diffuser because they are what creates the scent. Dozens of different fragrances are available, so you can choose one you enjoy or place diffusers with different scents in different areas of your home. Some home decor and department stores sell fragrance oils designed specifically for reed diffusers. You can also make the oil with an essential oil and a reed diffuser oil base. Simply pour the oil into the vase until it's about half-full. You can add more or less to your tastes, though.

    Reeds

    • The final component of a reed diffuser is the reeds that absorb the oil and transmit the pleasant fragrance. Reed sticks are the only type of stick that will work. Wood and bamboo are not useful because the oil will not be absorbed and move up the stick. The size of the stick is your preference. It will need to be tall enough that at least a few inches stick out the top of the jar. Most reed diffusing sticks are between 2.5mm and 3mm in diameter, and reeds of any diameter will work.
