Instructions

    • 1

Place newspaper under the outside of your rug to keep paint from getting on the surrounding floor.

    • 2

Adhere tape to the rug or carpet around its perimeter to create a border to frame your pattern.

    • 3

Place the stencil on the carpet parallel to the border. Stencils, usually used to paint patterns on walls, can be purchased at most craft or home improvement stores. Tape down the edges of the stencil so that it doesn't move while you are painting.

    • 4

Apply paint to the rug using the paint roller for even paint distribution. To use the paint roller, dip it in the paint tray and roll it through a couple times to make sure the roller's sponge is coated equally with paint all around. Place the roller on the stencil and roll over the stencil, being careful not to get paint on the surrounding carpet.

    • 5

Remove the tape that is securing the stencil and carefully lift the stencil from the rug so as not to smudge the paint. Line the stencil up next to the existing painted pattern so that the pattern continues seamlessly. Repeat steps 3 through 5 until your rug or carpet is completely covered with the pattern. The paint should take about two hours to dry.
