Long pile or short pile fabric will make a good rug, though wool, bulk continuous filament and acrylic also produce nice rugs. Purchase enough material to match the chosen zebra pattern. An average-sized zebra pattern is 2 yards long and 72 inches wide.

  Sketch the design of a zebra on a piece of graph paper for your pattern. Transfer the design to butcher paper, sketched to scale. Sketch the pattern according to the rug size. Zebra rugs generally show the outline of a zebra laying on his stomach with his limbs outstretched and his head looking outward.

  Lay the zebra pattern on the fabric.

  Trace around the pattern with a black felt tip pen.

  Cut out the material with sharp scissors.

  Repeat the procedure for the rug backing. Lay the pattern on the backing, trace it and cut it. you can purchase rug backing online or at a fabric shop. Buy the same amount of backing as faux zebra fabric.

  Squeeze fabric glue around the edges of the faux zebra fabric. Glue the backing to the fabric. Work slowly, squeezing and gluing a few inches at a time so that the backing fits snugly onto the fabric.
