Area Rug Alternatives

Though common in traditional decor, area rugs are just one of the many flooring options available for the home. The best flooring option for a room may depend on the style of decor as well as the homeowner's tolerance for cleaning. Each room should take advantage of the floor covering that's best for its appearance and intended use.
  1. Click-and-Lock Hardwood Flooring

    • Hardwood flooring gives a room a traditional look and is a very durable option. Hardwood may not be as soft to the touch as an area rug, but it comes in a range of colors. To quickly and easily replace your area rug, install the click-and-lock hardwood flooring, which installs right over your current floor.

    Bamboo Mats

    • Bamboo mats are a portable alternative to area rugs. They use natural bamboo wood, which is a fast-growing plant that renews itself quickly, making it a good environmental choice. Bamboo mats provide some of the same soft cushion that carpets and rugs do but are lighter and easier to roll for storage. Bamboo mats also have a textured, natural look that complements modern decor. Some mats use felt backings to ensure that they don't slip or damage the permanent flooring below.

    Foam Pads

    • For an area that is heavily trafficked by children, foam pads create a soft, safe play area. Some pads come in large rolls that parents can unfurl as needed, while others feature interlocking squares that kids can assemble themselves. Foam pads are easy to wipe down and, unlike carpets and rugs, don't trap dust and pollen, making them a healthy alternative for children with allergies. Textured foam pads feature a surface that resists slips even when it becomes wet, helping to prevent falls.
