How to Decorate Jack & Jill Bedrooms

Jack and Jill bedrooms, connected by a centrally shared bathroom, is a design typically used for siblings of either the opposite or the same sex. Finding common ground in bathroom decor is usually the biggest challenge, especially when decorating for both a boy and girl. However, the bedrooms provide more opportunity for individualized decorating options, but you can tie the rooms together with some type of unifying theme or decor.
  1. Themes

    • Using a similar theme in both bedrooms can create unity in Jack and Jill bedrooms. Nature themes often work; most children connect with animals, even if they're a different gender. An ocean or beach theme allows you to use similar accents like seashells or wall art such as tropical fish. Both boys and girls may enjoy a jungle theme, especially when each child can individualize their room’s decor according to their favorite animal. Your daughter may want monkeys in her room, while your son might be partial to lions. Use jungle-themed wallpaper and coordinating patterns in both rooms for a cohesive look.

    Color

    • Boys and girls rarely pick the same hues as their favorite colors, but you can tie the two rooms together with accent colors. If your son likes green, carry it over into your daughter’s room as a complementary accent to her favorite color, pink. Conversely, a cheerful yellow or orange hue in your daughter’s room becomes a bright pop of color against dark blue furniture or walls in your son’s room. The easiest way to tie the rooms together is with a neutral background, such as wheat- or almond-colored walls.

    Furniture

    • Using the same furniture style in each room also creates unity. Kids' furniture stores often carry complete bedroom sets in a variety of color options. A black or natural finish makes a good choice for a boy, with an identical set in white in a girl’s room. Use this look in other furnishings as well; for example, use identical bunk beds -- one in black and the other in white. Customize unfinished furniture for the exact look you want in each room.

    Accessories

    • Use similar accessories to coordinate the two rooms. Choose identical styles, shapes or materials for curtains and area rugs in different colors, according to each room’s color scheme. Identical light fixtures or flooring materials also help tie the rooms together. Make crafts and personalized accessories with a coordinated look, such as embroidered name accent pillows or block letters spelling out each child’s name as wall shelf decor or wall art.
