Welting, sometimes called piping or trim, adds a visual design element to pillows and cushions. It can be the same color as the pillow, adding subtle texture, or it can be in a stand out color. Adding welting to a pillow can seem intimidating, but anyone with beginning sewing skills can take on this DIY project. Plus, since welting is sold by the yard at craft and fabric stores, it can be added to any pillow, no matter the size.
Place the pillow front piece flat on a table, with the right side of the fabric facing up.
Pin the welting all the way around the edges of the pillow front piece, the flat edge of the welting lining up with the edges of the pillow piece.
Sew the welting to the pillow piece all along the flat edges, overlapping the welting slightly at the ends.
Place the pillow back piece directly on top of the front piece with the right side of the fabric facing down.
Sew the pillow bottom piece to the top piece, snug to the right of the curved edge of the welting. Leave a 6-inch opening.
Turn the pillow right side out, stuff it with batting and hand sew it closed.
