What Are the Different Sizes of Comforters?

An appropriately sized comforter keeps you warm from your neck to your toes by night and pleasingly drapes your bed by day. For a finished look, the comforter extends over the mattress to the top of the bedskirt. Typically, a comforter is larger than a duvet and smaller than a bedspread. In the United States, standard comforter sizes correlate with standard mattress sizes -- twin, full, queen and king.
  1. Standard Sizes

    • Twin comforters measure about 68 inches by 86 inches and fit one person. Generally, full comforters are 80 inches by 90 inches and are adequate for two people and spacious for one. Queen comforters are bigger, about 86 inches by 94 inches. Full/queen comforters are 88 inches by 88 inches and fit both full and queen beds. At 110 inches by 96 inches, and almost double the width of the twin, king comforters are the largest. The smallest standard comforters, which are sized for cribs, are about 36 inches by 50 inches.

    Size Variations

    • The standard sizes above should be considered a mere approximation because comforter sizes vary by manufacturer and by country. Some companies shave a few inches, while others oversize their products. Before purchasing a comforter, read its label for dimensions.

    Down Comforters

    • Down comforters are generally a few inches bigger than synthetic comforters. Twin sizes are 68 inches by 88 inches, full/queen comforters measure 90 inches by 98 inches and kings are about 108 inches by 98 inches. Down comforters often provide less coverage than the dimensions given because they tend to puff out.

    Atypical Beds

    • Standard comforter sizes fit most unusual bed sizes. A king comforter comfortably fits a California king mattress (which is narrower and longer than the king). A twin comforter will do for a twin x-long bed (which is longer than a twin and is commonly used in college dorms). A pillow-top mattress, which is thicker than a standard mattress, may require a larger comforter to cover the mattress completely. Because of these variances among beds, always measure your bed before choosing a comforter size.
