The Top Bright Colors for Painting Kitchens

For decades, kitchens were conventionally painted white or a pale pastel to showcase the colors and textures of cabinets, appliances, floors and countertops. In recent years, using brightly colored paint for kitchen walls has gained favor, as well as using vivid shades to spruce up doors, cabinets and floors.
  1. Wall Colors

    • If your kitchen is large, you can paint all the walls in vibrant hues of blue such as cobalt, robin’s egg or azure. Green-apple walls brighten up a spacious room, as well as lemon yellow. Smaller kitchens look better with just one wall painted in a brilliant color to give the room an open, airy feeling. Use stencils to create patterns on one wall with assorted colors that complement the bright solid colors on others.

    Floor Paint

    • Wooden plank floors painted in bright colors like red or yellow with waterproof paint are a good alternative to tile. Using a textured paint gives the floor a nonstick surface to prevent slipping. Painting the ceiling and floor the same color and using a bright contrasting hue on the walls create a showcase effect that highlights the appliances in the room. For a whimsical touch, paint “rugs” on the floor in front of the sink and stove, or create a checkerboard pattern with paint instead of tiles.

    Cabinets and Cupboards

    • Dress up white wooden cabinets by removing the doors, or replacing solid ones with glass-paned styles and painting the interiors one or various shades of brick red, ripe peach or strawberry. Freestanding cupboard drawers painted white and accented with bold blue knobs and handles add a vigorous color burst to the kitchen. Create a checkerboard backsplash of green and yellow, and paint the walls and ceilings in matching colors to bring the room together. Make the kitchen island the focal point of the room with a coat of grape purple or cherry red paint.

    Ins and Outs

    • Paint one side of the kitchen door with a lime green lacquer or semigloss meadow green, and cover the opposite side with a sunny yellow or sunset orange paint. Draw attention to a walk-in cupboard with a fire engine red door with black trim and hardware. Give French doors a new look by painting the tops and bottoms different shades of aqua, rose or green.

    Incorporating Wood

    • Dark and light shades of wood make the bright paint appear more vibrant. For an eye-catching decorating twist, cover the ceiling with laminate wood flooring, and paint the floor a glossy white to give the room an inverted feeling. Choose shades of grassy green and egg-yolk yellow to adorn the walls and set off the dark wood color of the ceiling and white floor.
