How to Repaint a Bed Black

If your bed frame is looking a little outdated, you can refresh it with a coat of paint. Black is a color that works well in many decorating themes, including Asian inspired, contemporary and modern. It is essential to take the right steps before painting a bed black to ensure that the paint will not fleck off. Because this is a dark color, any flakes will show immediately and detract from the look of the furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the bed apart. Remove the mattress and use a screwdriver or drill to undo the hardware holding the bed together. Place all of the hardware in a plastic bag and put it aside in a safe place. Move the bed frame onto a large table so you can easily paint it.

    • 2

Sand the wood. Any existing finish on the wood will need to be removed. Use a medium to harsh grade of sandpaper and go over every part of the bed. It may be necessary to do this several times. Continue until the wood is smooth and any former trace of finish is gone.

    • 3

Wipe the frame down with a damp cloth. Small particles of sawdust will ruin the finish of your paint. Use a damp cloth and thoroughly clean off any debris on the wood. Give this a few minutes to dry before beginning to paint.

    • 4

Apply a coat of primer. This will help cover the wood and allow the black paint to adhere properly. Give the primer at least four hours to dry before applying paint.

    • 5

Apply the first coat of black paint. Use a medium-sized brush or a small roller and carefully paint the frame. Go with the grain of the wood. Use a very thin coat and remove any drips as they occur. Smooth the entire first coat out with a roller. Allow this coat four to six hours to dry.

    • 6

Apply a second and even third coat. Roller and brush marks are visible with black paint. You may need up to three coats for good coverage. Sand lightly with a fine grade of sandpaper in between coats to ensure that the paint will adhere properly. Once the frame is dry, inspect it carefully for any brush marks. Give the last coat six to eight hours to dry.

Reassemble the bed. Put the bed back together and replace the mattress.
