How to Make Plaster Look Old & Antique

You can create an old-world look by using a paint technique that makes plaster walls look weathered and aged. Distressing the wall and working it with a combination of paint and water is an easy process. It doesn’t take any special skill and you can use any color desired to complement your decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface of your walls by creating nicks, grooves and worn surfaces with a hammer, screwdriver and sandpaper. Lightly tap dents and marks into the wall with the hammer and screwdriver. Scatter the blemishes randomly all over on the surface. Then lightly sand rough patches into the wall by running a piece of sandpaper across the surface in scattered, random places and in all different directions.

Fill a bucket with water to have it ready with a terry cloth rag for the painting process. Working in small sections, apply the paint to the wall with the paintbrush. Then dip the terry cloth rag into the water bucket, wring out most of the water and use the rag to quickly remove most of the paint from the wall. This should leave a light hint of color on the wall with darker hues of color in the nicks, dents and scratches.

Repeat the process in small sections until you have covered the entire wall to complete the project.
