How to Paint Wood-Textured Doors

A fiberglass door may have a textured surface that resembles wood grain in appearance. These doors provide the elegant and understated textures of wood with the low-maintenance benefits of fiberglass. When you paint wood-textured doors, use latex paint for a simple application process that will cover the door surface effectively and attractively. Once you finish, the doors should stay neat and tidy for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the door with the 440-grit sandpaper to prepare it for the paint. Wipe the door surface with the tack cloth to remove dust.

    • 2

Saturate the lint-free rag with denatured alcohol. Rub the surface of the door with the alcohol to clean it thoroughly.

    • 3

Cover the door hardware, including the doorknob and metal hinges, with painter’s tape.

    • 4

Stir the paint with the stir stick and load the 4-inch paintbrush with the paint. Apply paint to the door in vertical strokes, covering the door surface with an even layer of paint. As you paint, keep the paint layer thin enough to allow the wood texture to be visible through the paint. Paint the narrow edges of the door also with a thin and even coat of paint. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 5

Load the 1-inch paintbrush with paint and coat the top and bottom edges of the door with a very thin layer of paint to seal these surfaces.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of paint over the first coat of paint, applying it in a thin layer. Allow this coat of paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 7

Remove the painter’s tape from the door hardware.
