How to Paint a Pitched Ceiling

Dramatically sloping pitched ceilings, also called vaulted ceilings or cathedral ceilings, give your home an open and airy feel. A painted pitched ceiling can add to the overall decor of the room. Light colors make the room seem larger while a dark ceiling will make the room cozier and more intimate. Choose whichever color best suits the rest of the room’s color scheme. Unfortunately, the steep slopes make it tricky to paint pitched ceilings.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the furniture from the room and place a drop cloth over the floor.

    • 2

Climb a ladder and vacuum the walls and ceiling to remove dust and cobwebs.

    • 3

Attach a roller extension arm to the end of a roller to reach the high ceiling better.

    • 4

Pour the primer into a roller pan and coat the paint roller. The roller should be wet but not dripping. Apply the primer to the ceiling in three-foot squares. Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours. Rinse off the roller pan and rollers with water.

Pour the ceiling paint into the roller pan and coat the roller with paint so it’s wet but not dripping.

    • 6

Paint the ceiling, starting on the side of the room that corresponds to your dominant hand. Paint to the other side of the room in three-foot squares. Make sure to overlap the paint with the surrounded squares in order to avoid streaks. Extend the ladder and use the roller extensions to reach the highest corners of your pitched ceiling.
