How to Paint a Bedroom Purple and What Accessories to Use

The color purple comes in many shades and each evokes certain emotions in the bedroom. Dark purple conveys feelings of luxury and sensuality, while lighter shades of purple seem feminine and innocent. Once you select the ideal purple shade for your bedroom, choose accessories to add a special accent and personal touch.
  1. Purple Shades and Accent Colors

    • The color purple isn't just for children and teenagers. To some, purple seems too childish or feminine. A dark shade, accented with red or dark brown hues, is a color combination that adults can appreciate. Dark purple can make both women and men feel like royalty.
If you want to paint a teenage girl's bedroom purple, choose a lighter shade, such as lavender, lilac or violet. These shades combine the feeling of innocence with playful flirtatiousness. Adding accent colors is an ideal way to highlight the purple walls in a room. For example, paint the walls purple and the ceiling white, black or blue.

    Getting Ready to Paint

    • Before you paint the bedroom, prepare it, and yourself, for the job. Remove all furniture from the room, including dressers and the bed. If you cannot remove a large object, move it to the middle of the room and put a drop cloth over it. Lay drop cloths on the floor. Put on old clothing and protective goggles. Scrape off old paint or wallpaper. Fill any holes in the wall with patching compound. Vacuum the room, paying particular attention to the baseboards. Wash the walls with water and trisodium phosphate (TSP).

    Painting the Room

    • Apply a coat of primer to the walls before you start painting. You do not need to use as much paint if you use primer. Once you apply the primer, pour paint into a large tray. Paint the room's trim with the purple paint. A two-inch angle sash brush works well for this. Use the same type of brush to paint the edges of the trim. Dip a roller brush into the paint and start to paint the wall. Make a "W" motion with the roller as you paint the wall.

    Accessories for Purple Rooms

    • After the painting job, it's time to add some accessories to make the room look its best. For a teenager or young girl's room, add white, flowing curtains. White curtains complement pale purple shades. For an adult's room, add to the feeling of luxury with crystal or glass bowls. Toss a few purple throw pillows on the bed. A vase filled with violets or daisies accents any purple room. Don't choose too many purple accessories when decorating the room. Too much purple can be overwhelming to some people.
