Sand the surface of the glossy wood using a sanding buffer with a medium-grit sanding disc.
Vacuum the area to remove any sawdust and debris.
Fill a paint tray with latex primer and coat a 3-inch flat paintbrush in the primer.
Paint the primer in an even layer over the entire surface of the glossy-painted wood. Allow the primer to dry eight to 12 hours. The primer will cover over dark, bold or shiny paint to create a flat matte layer on which you can apply other paint.
Sand the surface of the primer-covered wall using fine-grit sandpaper to ensure the finish is smooth. Vacuum to remove any dust or debris.
Fill a second paint tray with matte latex paint. Coat a second 3-inch flat paintbrush in the paint.
Apply the latex paint in an even layer over the primer-covered surface of the wood. Allow the paint to dry eight to 12 hours.
Apply a second coat of paint over the wood using the same methods as before. Allow the paint to dry for an additional eight to 12 hours before using or handling the wood.
