How to Use CFL in Recessed Lights

A compact fluorescent light (CFL) is an energy efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs. They use between 50 and 80 percent less electricity than incandescent bulbs, and are appropriate for use in almost any light fixture where you can use regular light bulbs. This includes recessed lighting, which is a light housed in the ceiling that hides the fixture.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a flood lamp type of CFL bulb. These are the CFL bulbs most appropriate for recessed can lights. They produce less heat than other forms of CFLs, which can be an issue in recessed bulbs. Match the lumens of the CFL bulb to the watts of the incandescent bulb you are taking out of the recessed light. A chart on the CFL package will tell you the correct lumens.

Remove the existing bulb in the recessed lighting can. Screw the CFL bulb into the light socket in the recessed can, turning the bulb to the right until it is tight.

    • 3

Leave off the cover of the recessed light, if there is one. Covering a CFL bulb may cause it to overheat.
