How to Make Fabric Covered Roller Shades

Roller shades are most often not covered with fabric due to the fact that they are often times used in offices, schools, and other areas where your personality cannot be fully displayed. However, due to the fact that they are very tidy and easy to handle, it may be desirable for a modern home. Making sure that your roller shades are not too boring for your house may require additional work, such as applying a layer of fabric to your shades. The easiest way to do this is with a DIY shade kit and some fabric. The process will take an afternoon at most.

Take the roller with the brackets attached and hold it up above the window frame. Outline where the brackets go with the pencil and remove the roller. Hold the brackets up against the wall where you outlined them and, with a screwdriver and some screws, screw the brackets into the wall through the holes in the brackets.

Measure the width of the roller and the height from the brackets to around 1 inch below the frame. Mark the width and height on the shade cloth with the pencil. Cut along the drawn lines with the scissors. Use the lint brush on one side of the shade cloth until the side is completely smooth.

Pour some glue at the top of the shade cloth and evenly distribute the glue throughout the side with the paint roller. Roll until there are no air bubbles left. Take your fabric and drop it over the shade cloth. Push down on the surface with your palms and chase away any air that gets trapped and forms bubbles between the two surfaces. Smooth out the whole surface and trim off the sides with the scissors. Apply a small amount of glue to the top and glue it to the roller from the kit.

Take the roller and hook the chain around the tracks. Push the other side into the pin bracket on top of your window. The pin bracket is the one with a simple hole in it. Push the roller towards the wall until the roller pops into the tab bracket. Pull the chain down tight and hook the tie-down bracket to the inside of the chain. Hold the bracket against the inside of the windowsill directly below the tab bracket. Use the screwdriver to drive a screw into the sill. Tighten the screw to hold the bracket in place.
