How to Calculate the Size of a Chandelier

Crystal chandeliers were originally installed in churches, theaters and in the homes of the wealthy. Today's chandeliers are made from many different materials and can be found in a variety of settings. As chandeliers are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, it's important that the size be appropriate for the room. If the fixture is too small, it may not provide the amount of light and visual impact desired. If it's too large, the chandelier may overpower the room's other elements. Before heading off to the store, calculate the size that would work best for your space.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the room where the chandelier will be installed. In general, you should allow approximately 3 inches per foot. For example, if the room is 10 feet tall, the light fixture should be not more than 30 inches in height.

    • 2

Add 1 to 2 inches to the height measurement if the room has unusually high ceilings. Additionally, the chandelier should not hang lower than seven feet from the floor.

    • 3

Add the dimensions of the room to determine the width of the chandelier. For example, in a 10-by-12-foot room, the chandelier should not be wider than 22 inches in diameter.

    • 4

Hang a dining room chandelier about 30 inches above and centered over the dining room table. If the table is unusually long, consider installing two smaller chandeliers.
