How to Install Puck Lights in a Series

Puck lights are disk-shaped lights installed in a series that can allow targeted lighting in underlit areas such as shelves, in cabinets or closets, or on ceilings and walls. They usually plug into an outlet with a standard cord. This arrangement looks professional but is easy for a non-pro to install. The basic installation procedure requires only minimal tools in addition to the materials that come in the box, including screws and lightweight drywall anchors.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the puck lights into the outlet and position them in the area of installation with the help of an assistant. Use an extension cord temporarily if necessary to allow the lights to light up due to the positioning of cabinets or other obstacles that the cord will pass through after holes are drilled. Unplug the extension cord and set it aside after positioning is done.

    • 2

Adjust the lights with the room lights on and off to find the best possible arrangement. Mark the location of each screw attachment hole for each puck light once the lights are in the desired location. Mark any spots in cabinet walls or shelves through which the electrical cord will need to pass for an unobtrusive installation.

    • 3

Drill holes in each screw attachment hole marking, making sure the holes do not puncture through to the other side of the surface into which you are drilling. Drill out each hole necessary for the electrical cord to pass through the cabinets or shelves that are in the way.

    • 4

Disconnect the electrical cord from the puck lights if it's convenient and pass the cord through the holes in the cabinets and shelves. Plug the cord into the light and position the lights in their intended positions with the help of an assistant.

    • 5

Set the attachment screws through each light and into each hole. Tighten them completely and evenly to attach the lights.

    • 6

Make sure the lights are unplugged, and begin to staple the power cord to the surface it runs along to keep it out of the way. Staple the cord every 12 inches, paying close attention to keep the staples evenly spaced on the cord. Staple at each turn until the cord reaches the outlet. Coil the excess cord and stash it somewhere out of sight. Plug the cord into the outlet.
