Reasons for Building a Home Bar

Whether you build a home bar yourself or hire someone to do so, they can be a great addition to a living space. There are many different styles of bars, so it is important to determine how the bar will be used and the theme of the room. Popular in basements, home bars add space for entertaining and easy access to drinks. They may also add value to your home in the long term.
  1. Decoration

    • Perhaps you have an empty space in your basement and are looking for ways to decorate. Home bars are popular for basement decorating. Bar themes include a game room, English pub, tropical/tiki, sports theme or old-time diner. Decide on a theme, and then choose an appropriate home bar design.

    Entertaining

    • If you enjoy entertaining, building a home bar could be a good investment. For planned parties or when guests simply drop by, all the cocktails and glassware are stored in one place and ready to use. For larger parties with hired caterers and bartenders, home bars provide a built-in space for the bartender to serve drinks.

    More Storage

    • Wine collectors or beer aficionados may need more space for bottles. Home bars often have wine cabinets or refrigeration systems. Some wine chillers are small and can sit on the countertop, while other large refrigeration systems can hold more than 50 bottles. Liquor bottles, glassware, blenders and other bar tools take up more space than may be available in the kitchen. Thus, a home bar is a good option for additional storage.

    Easy Access to Drinks

    • If your basement is set up as a home theater or game room, it is often nice to have beverages easily available instead of having to run upstairs to the kitchen. Whether playing pool with friends or watching a movie with the family, it is nice to have additional refrigeration and access to drinks on the same level of the home.

    Relaxing at Home

    • After a long day of work, many people prefer to relax at home. A home bar allows you to unwind and have a drink at the end of the day without having to go out. Invite friends over and sit at the bar in the comfort of your own home. Drinks are often more expensive at bars than if you purchase them at a liquor store or grocery store, so a home bar may even save money in the long run.

    Access to Beer on Tap

    • Many people prefer beer on tap to bottled beer. A home bar would allow you to have an attractive, built-in keg refrigerator. A small refrigerator can be built underneath the bar, with the beer towers sitting on top of the bar to dispense the beer. It can also be more economical to purchase a keg of beer rather than bottles.

    Add Value to Home

    • Built-in bars can be very attractive and add value to a home. Finishing a basement to include a bar, game room or home theater adds to the available living space in the home and is appealing to potential home buyers.
