What is Laminex Made From?

Plastic laminate is a material used in bathrooms, kitchens, hospitals, restaurants and even bowling alleys. Despite its name, plastic laminate is made of only 18 percent plastic resin. Laminex is an Australian company that produces plastic laminate.
  1. Making Plastic Laminate

    • High-pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) is made of saturated layers of paper and plastic resin. The paper and resin are fused into a single sheet after exposure to high heat. Laminate sheets are then bonded (using an adhesive) to plywood, fiberboard or particleboard for strength.

    Environment Impact and Substance

    • Plastic laminate is predominantly made of chlorine-free decorative paper, which makes it a better environmental choice than synthetic laminates. Laminate is a durable substance for interior use. It can endure heat of up to 180 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for stovetops. However, direct exposure to steam heat on the surface can change the color of the laminate.

    Maintaining Plastic Laminate

    • Although laminate surfaces are durable, they must be maintained. Placing pots or pans straight from the oven or stove onto a laminate surface is not advisable. Avoid cutting on the laminate, and do not wax or polish the surface because it will dull the natural shine. In addition, do not use strong alkaline cleaners or bleach on laminate because they may etch the surface.

    Bowling Alleys

    • Bowling alley lanes are now made of plastic laminate. Laminate lanes are superior to wood because laminate does not warp under the weight of bowling balls. Laminate lanes also allow for a more accurate bowl.
