Look into the specific building codes in the city or town that you live in. Sometimes, you will need a signature and the go ahead from a building inspector. Begin the top of the stairs at a loft or opening of floor. Do not place the stairs against a wall because this will not give you enough headroom while using the stairs. The headroom on the swirl stairs should be 6 feet by 6 inches.
Measure the diameter and the height of your stairs. The diameter should give you a clearance of 2 inches from the walls and floor to place the handrail. Use the saw to cut the risers at 4 inches wide each. Using wider risers will curl and not allow you to use them once they are cut. Alternate the grains of wood when the pieces are assembled.
Use the glue to put the pieces together once the cut areas are sanded down. Cut the inner stairs using the band saw. This will allow the wood to come out circular. Mount each of the stairs as you go to ensure that the radius of the staircase is correct using the screws.
Mount the center pole using a plumb bob. This makes the staircase sturdy. All of the weight from the staircase is going to be resting on the pole in the middle. The center pole should be the same length as the height measurement from the floor to ceiling for the staircase.
Weld the bottom and top steps to the pole in the center. Attach the rest of the stairs using the screws. They should all be tightly attached to the pole in the center. Install and attach the railing to the center pole. Purchasing a railing specifically for a swirl staircase is beneficial.
