Instructions

    • 1

Sand the wainscoting with fine-grit sandpaper, rubbing the sandpaper all over the surface. Repeat the process, using a medium-grit sandpaper. Go back over the wainscoting a third time, rubbing fine-grit sandpaper over all areas. Wipe down the wainscoting with a wet rag.

    • 2

Apply an even coating of primer to the wainscoting, using a paint roller. Go over the wainscoting a second time with a paintbrush, coating any cracks, crevices or other areas you missed with the paint roller. Wait until the primer completely dries.

    • 3

Paint the wainscoting in a light color, applying the paint to all areas. Use more paint on each separate piece. After the paint dries, use the darker shade as an accent. Paint the darker color inside any curved or raised areas on the design.

Separate the wainscoting from the walls above with masking tape and old newspaper. Tape the newspaper to the wainscoting. Cover the floors with a plastic tarp. Paint the walls above with the darker shade of paint, drawing the different elements of the walls together.

Tear pictures and pages from vintage fairy-tale or children’s books. Place the images inside the picture frames, trimming off any excess with the scissors. Hang the picture frames on the walls above the wainscoting, using the hammer and nails.
