How to Make a Wall Into a Bar

Home design and remodel projects range from simple shelf installation to converting a room into something entirely different. One unique idea is to turn a wall into a bar. You can literally use a wall as a bar surface, or build a bar into a wall. Check with your local government before you begin work to ensure you have the proper permits, if any are required.
  1. Look for Unique Walls

    • If you are converting an existing piece of wall into a bar, look for unique walls to make a unique bar. Drywall is pretty boring; you can paint it for more flash, but in the end, a piece of drywall will make for an average looking bar top at best. Instead, find a unique wall, like an old wooden wall, log cabin wall or anything else in your house that has character and originality. The bar will be more appealing and eye-catching, and it makes for a great conversation piece when you are entertaining in your new bar.

    Location

    • Don't build a bar in your house in a place that doesn't make sense. For example, if you have a living room with nice carpet and furniture, building a bar in or near the room is likely a bad idea, as spills are bound to happen near a bar. Instead, look for space in the basement, near a recreational room, near the kitchen or in another area where you are happy to entertain guests without disturbing other parts of your home. An outdoor bar is also an option, especially in year-round warm weather locations.

    Built-In Bar

    • Another option is to build a bar directly into a wall in your home. This might make sense in a wall that divides the kitchen from the family or recreation room. As long as the wall is not load bearing, you should be able to remove the top half of the wall and install a bar. This opens the space, so the area feels bigger. It also creates a central bar, so you can serve from either side. If you have no experience in home demolition and remodeling, consider hiring a contractor to do the work, or at least specialists to do work like electrical wiring and plumbing, if necessary.

    Additional Bar Projects

    • When you create a bar out of a piece of wall or build a bar into a wall, you'll probably need to buy or build some other things as well. For example, you probably need shelving under, over or next to the new bar. Also, you might want to install a miniature fridge or wine fridge to keep some beverages cool. If you are installing a tap, you'll need the proper tubing that connects to the beer keg.
