The Best Types of Exterior Trim on a House

Exterior trim is important but is all too often overlooked when designing the outside of a house. It is a decorative item that when properly chosen can add quite a bit of curb appeal. When done poorly or with inferior materials, the trim can detract from a home's curb appeal, and therefore its overall value. The importance of getting the trim right should not be underestimated.
  1. Wood

    • Wood exterior trim is preferred by many home builders and homeowners. This is because it has a look that many find appealing. This is true even if the house itself is made from a material other than wood. Wood is also affordable, as considerably less of it is needed than the material required for siding and framing. Wood is also attractive because it is easy to nail into place and requires relatively little maintenance. Pine is the most common type of wood trim.

    Crown Molding

    • Crown molding is a type of decorative wood trim often found inside of homes along the spot where the top of the wall meets with the ceiling. Crown molding is prized for its classic aesthetic look, and it works just as well on the outside of a home as it does on the inside. It is even more appealing since it is not used for exterior trim as often. This means that a home with exterior crown molding trim will be especially eye catching and it adds to curb appeal.

    Treated Wood

    • Treated wood is even better than standard pine for exterior trim. Since the trim is on the outside of the house, it has to stand up to the weather as well as woodboring insects. Wood that has been treated against rain and snow as well as insects will hold up much better over time. One company used by renovation expert Bob Vila in a Habitat for Humanity house is Louisiana Pacific's Smart System Products, which makes an engineered wood used for exterior trim. It keeps out insects and holds up better than traditionally treated wood.

    Wood Alternatives

    • While wood is often best, some wish to go a different route. Wood is not the only viable option for exterior trim. Aluminum and vinyl trim are favored by those looking for inexpensive and durable wood alternatives. These may not be quite as appealing to look at, but you'll save money upfront as well as in maintenance. Aluminum and vinyl trim require less maintenance than wood.
