How to Create a Foyer Space in an Apartment

If you live in an apartment, you still may want a designated spot that welcomes you -- and your guests -- to your home. Many apartments open up to a living space, but you can separate an area from the rest of the space by utilizing furniture scaled correctly and incorporating welcoming details in your belongings. Even the smallest of spaces can coordinate with your home. In addition to or instead of furniture, transform the entrance to your apartment with a simple division of space by installing a screen, panel or fabric.
  1. Minimal Modern

    • On a small wall, install a floating shelf to drop keys. Place a small vase of flowers on the shel and hang a mirror over. A variety of shelves are available in home improvement stores, which you can cut to size if necessary. If the open edge of the cut shelf is visible, paint it to match the color of the shelf. If space allows, place a cube or storage ottoman underneath the shelf to help the area function.

    Floor Divider

    • Create a separate space by adding a standing screen that complements your home decor or open cubby-style shelving installed as a divider that allows light and adds functionality to a foyer space. Utilize baskets on the bottom shelves for storage, and place decorative objects on the upper shelves, such as a dish for keys, a basket for mail and a small sculpture.

    Architectural Divider

    • For transparency, install a glass or acrylic panel, which a fabricator can custom-make for you. Take a cue from the style of your apartment and have custom wood pillars made to divide the open floor space near your front door. Paint the pillars to match your walls so they blend in but provide a physical and visual separation. Have ornamental iron work installed to create a design "wow" factor for your foyer, or go to an estate sale and look for an architectural gate to utilize as an interior divider.

    Economical Solutions

    • Hang a curtain from the ceiling that hangs all the way to the floor to help create a foyer space. Sew two different pieces of fabric together, right-sides out, so that one piece faces the entrance, and the other fabric faces the other area for two different, but coordinated, styles. Purchase a ready-made decorative string of beads, or make your own. Choose one of the many styles of beads available, ranging from plastic-colored beads to sophisticated strings of metal that add a glamorous effect. For a foyer with storage capability, place an open console or low shelves with baskets along the open area near the door to define the space.
