How to Refinish a Satin Gloss Hardwood Floor

A satin gloss wood floor is a wise choice for many homeowners and lifestyles. Satin gloss gives you a slight amount of shine, but with an overall matte finish. This means that your wood floors are more forgiving when it comes to scratches and dings. If you'd like to showcase your wood, however, refinishing it to a higher gloss finish or even adding some pigment can make your floor more eye-catching.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/3 cup trisodium phosphate and 1 gallon water into a bucket. Dip a mop in the mixture and swab down the floor that you plan to refinish, cleansing it thoroughly. Wipe down the floor with an old, clean towel and allow it to air dry completely.

    • 2

Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an upright sander. Run the sander across the surface area of the floor, buffing out the old finish. Repeat with 200-grit sandpaper and 300-grit sandpaper. Repeat this entire process along the edges with a handheld orbital sander.

    • 3

Run a shop vacuum across the floor when you're done, to remove all the dust caused from sanding. Tape off any baseboards and other areas you don't want to get new finish on with painter's tape.

    • 4

Pour the new finish of your choice, be it varnish, tinted polyurethane or another substance into your paint roller pan.

    • 5

Dip your paint roller in the finish and apply it to the floor, starting at the far left corner, working your way from left to right, until you've covered the entire floor. Allow it to dry overnight and apply a second coat, allowing this final coat to dry for 24 hours.

Dip a fine abrasive pad in water and buff the floors once more once they're dry.
