How to Add Storage to the Tops of Kitchen Cabinets

Many kitchen cabinets are not built all the way up to the ceiling. This leaves a gap that collects dust unless it is used. Decorative items can be placed on top of the cabinets, but if you are short on counter or cupboard space, you are going to be happy for that little extra room. If you don't have something to store items in, slide small appliances and other household items onto the top of the cabinets.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Add separate shelves above the cabinets. Use boards attached to "L" brackets for simple shelves. These shelves are open so everyone can see what you are displaying, so choose some of your favorite items to keep up there.

    • 2

Put baskets above the cabinets to store items in. Baskets can be clear and see-through but they can also be a solid color to keep objects hidden and add to your decor. Store small items that you don't frequently use in the baskets.

Fill large canisters with dry food or other small items and tuck them up above the cabinets. These canisters are air tight and will keep out dust, so you can store items for a long time. Choose canisters that go with your room. For example, use vintage canisters for an old-world-style room.
