Materials:
Black or brown felt
White or cream felt
Black or brown fabric (for the pants)
Headband
Googly eyes
Black yarn
Red felt (for the mouth)
Needle and thread
Scissors
Pinking shears (optional)
Measuring Tape
Instructions:
1. Measure and Cut the Fabric:
Measure the length from your child's waist to their ankles, then add 2-3 inches to give some extra space.
Measure the child's waist size and add 1 inch for seam allowance.
Cut out two pieces of felt in the dimensions measured. These pieces will be the "legs" of the costume.
2. Create the Ant's Body:
Using black or brown fabric, cut a rectangular shape that is approximately the length from the child's waist to their knees, and the width should be about 2-3 inches narrower than the child's waist measurement.
Hem the edges of the rectangular fabric piece neatly.
Turn the rectangular piece inside out so the seams are hidden.
3. Assemble the Legs:
Place one of the felt "legs" pieces on the right side of the fabric, about 2-3 inches below the top edge.
Sew the felt leg to the fabric along one long side, stopping a few inches from the bottom edge.
Repeat the process with the other felt leg piece, attaching it to the left side of the fabric.
4. Add Details to the Legs:
Use the pinking shears to cut wavy patterns on the edges of the felt legs to give them a realistic ant-like appearance.
Sew small pieces of black yarn or felt at the knee and ankle areas of the legs to suggest joints.
5. Create the Headband:
Take the headband and glue a pair of googly eyes near the center.
Cut out two small black felt circles and glue them just above the eyes to create the antennae.
Cut out a small piece of red felt and glue it below the eyes for the mouth.
Make sure everything is securely attached.
6. Attach the Headband to the Costume:
Using a needle and thread, attach the headband to the top of the costume, aligning it in the center of the fabric.
Make sure the headband is securely sewn to the costume.
7. Add Extra Details (Optional):
You can add additional details to the costume such as felt wings or small felt circles to represent the ant's mandibles.
Encourage creativity and let your child help decorate their costume.
Remember to adjust measurements and sizes based on your child's specific needs. With a little effort, you can create fun and memorable ant costumes for your kids.
