A pinwheel is a simple toy that spins in the breeze. Make homemade pinwheels with decorative scrapbook paper to match any occasion. Give your homemade pinwheels out as party favors, to neighborhood children to enjoy in the spring or use them to decorative your yard for an outdoor summer dinner party. Each pinwheel will only take you a few minutes to construct with inexpensive supplies from the craft store.

Things You'll Need

  • Double-sided decorative scrapbook paper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Quarter
  • Thumbtack
  • 18-inch-long 1/2-inch-diameter wooden dowel
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a 6-inch square of double-sided decorative scrapbook paper.

    • 2

Use a ruler and pencil to draw diagonal lines connecting the corners of the square.

    • 3

Place a quarter over the intersection of the lines in the center of the square. Trace around the quarter.

    • 4

Cut along the diagonal lines in toward the center of the square from the corners. Stop the cuts when you reach outline of the circle in the center of the square. This divides the square into four triangles.

    • 5

Fold the left point of the bottom triangle into the center of the square. Hold the point there while you rotate the square a quarter turn to the left.

    • 6

Fold the left point of the new bottom triangle in to the center of the square. Keep rotating the square and folding up the bottom left points until you have all four points in the center of the square overlapping each other.

    • 7

Stick a thumbtack through all the overlapping points in the center of the square. Tap the thumbtack into one end of the wooden dowel to secure the pinwheel to it.
