How to Make Floral Wreaths

Make handmade floral wreaths to reflect any season or holiday, such as Easter, autumn or Christmas. Fresh flower wreaths will infuse your home with vibrant color and a sweet fragrance. If you're on a budget or desire a longer-lasting wreath, you can use silk flowers instead of real blooms. When opting for faux flowers, make sure they are as realistic looking as possible to create an elegant wreath. Display a charming floral wreath on a front door or any wall in your home. Homemade wreaths also make thoughtful holiday and birthday gifts.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose fresh flowers to decorate the wreath. Pick the flower color according to a specific season or holiday. Go with red and white roses for Valentine's Day, pink and white peonies and purple hydrangeas for a spring- or summer-inspired style, or deep red and orange gerbera daisies for an autumn-themed look. Pick faux flowers instead of fresh if you desire.

Fill a large shallow container or a sink with cool water. Place a 12-inch floral foam wreath base in the bowl and allow it to absorb the water. Omit this step if you're using faux flowers.

    • 3

Snip the flowers with scissors, leaving approximately 2 inches of the stem intact. Cut the stems at an angle to allow the blooms to soak up the maximum amount of water.

    • 4

Insert the flower stems into the water-saturated wreath, working in a circular pattern. Make three rows of flowers: one around the top outside portion of the wreath, one around the middle and one around the inside. Leave the back of the wreath empty so you can hang it against a wall. Alternate the flower colors by row, or randomly insert them into the wreath. Insert a few green leaf stems around the wreath for a fresh look.

Loop a wide grosgrain ribbon through the completed wreath for hanging. Tie the ribbon in a bow at the top of the loop as a decorative touch.

    • 6

Refresh the wreath daily by placing it into a shallow container filled with cool water after removing the ribbon; the wreath will stay fresh for up to a week.
