How to Decorate With Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers aren't just for sitting pretty in a vase. Placed throughout the home in various containers and vessels, fresh flowers not only enhance the decor, they add fragrance and spirit. A vase of fresh flowers in the guest room and buckets of fresh flowers in the living spaces reflect a person who pays attention to detail and likes having a bit of the outdoors inside -- no matter what the season.

Fill containers usually used for other items with fresh flowers. For example, a watering can, a bucket, a cooking pot or even an umbrella stand can all hold fresh flowers. However, you might want to save tall flowers like gladiolas for the umbrella stand.

Choose seasonal flowers such as tulips in the spring and mums in the fall. Pastel colors are a common sight in the spring, while bright flowers such as sunflowers, dahlias and roses make a statement in the summer.

Create arrangements with flowers and candles for interesting centerpieces. Use floral foam soaked in water and placed in a container of your choice. Place your candle(s) in the center of the floral foam or in another holder, if you have one. Trim the flowers so that they will be lower than the candles, and then poke the stems into the floral foam around the candles. The foam keeps the flowers fresh just as a vase does and holds them in place. Water the arrangement regularly to keep the flowers alive longer.

Place flower blooms in tea cups or bowls full of water. This is a nice idea for a bathroom or a way to create simple centerpieces or areas of interest on cabinets or windowsills. Clip the bloom off leaving little stem and place in the tea cup. A large bowl can handle more than one bloom.

Hang window boxes on the inside of your house and plant annuals year-round in them. Placing the flowers in pots and then setting them in the flower boxes makes the flowers easily changed out with the seasons, and it also means you can put a pot of rosemary in with a pot of zinnias or marigolds.

Line a basket with moss and then again with a piece of plastic sheeting just large enough to meet the edges of the basket but not show over the top. The moss will show through the basket and the plastic sheet will be pushed down inside the moss, hidden from view. Fill the basket with cut flowers. This arrangement can be easily watered without worrying about drips.
