The Pros of Porcelain

Porcelain tiles are a very popular choice of tile. They are first pressed under 6,000 pounds per square inch of pressure and then baked in kilns at 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. This process is considerably more extreme than the methods used to make other types of tiles. This gives porcelain a number of different properties that have made it extremely popular.
  1. Durability

    • Porcelain is much harder and denser than other types of tiles. Compared with other tiles, porcelain contains less clay and more of mineral called feldspar. This increases porcelain's break strength, which makes it extremely durable and resistant to scratching, chipping and breaking. This durability also makes porcelain resistant to harsher cleaning agents and heavier loads. Thus, porcelain is commonly used in public places that are high-traffic areas.

    Aesthetically Pleasing

    • Porcelain tiles can be used decoratively and increase the aesthetics of any room. This is primarily due to the wide variety of colors, textures, designs and styles that are available. Some higher-end porcelain tiles are even made to look like natural stone, granite, slate, travertine, limestone, marble, quartzite, terracotta and even some woods and metals. This allows designers and homeowners to use porcelain tile flooring to accent practically any design scheme.

    Water Absorption

    • Porcelain tiles also have a low water absorption rate. This makes them perfect for environments that are consistently exposed to water, such as bathrooms, kitchens or outdoor patios. This low absorption rate also increases overall air quality by not soaking up chemicals when being cleaned. In addition, their low absorption rate makes porcelain tiles less likely to stain and easier to clean.

    Maintenance

    • Porcelain is extremely easy to maintain. Initially, porcelain tiles need to be sealed and grouted upon installation. But, there is no long-term maintenance besides being cleaned with a mop and all purpose cleaner. Regular cleaning will remove dirt and grime, maintaining the finish and look of the porcelain tiles. Due to the limited maintenance needed, porcelain has recently become a popular choice for flooring in homes.
