Painted Canvas Floorcloth Ideas

Painted canvas floorcloths can be a satisfying way to change the look of a floor without changing or damaging it. This makes them ideal for rental situations or if you simply like to change the look of a room frequently, such as during holidays or during each season. Acrylic and latex paints work well on floorcloths and are quite durable. They won't take long to dry and are quite forgiving as well, being easy to repaint if necessary.
  1. Seasonal and Holidays

    • Think of some scenes or design ideas for the seasons you'd like to create on canvas. A beach scene would be fitting for summer, for instance, or perhaps a variety of colored leaves for autumn. Snowmen or giant snowflakes would be fitting for winter. Holiday themes would be easy to create as well: Easter eggs and bunnies for Easter or a spooky scene for Halloween.

    Geometric

    • Geometric patterns can be quite stunning on floorcloths. The standard checkerboard pattern in contrasting colors is always a classic and can be made to mimic the look of vintage floor tile. You could also create quilt-style geometric patterns, or even pop art or op art. There are many books full of patterns for quilts and op art; you could simply copy one of these ideas onto your canvas with a pencil and then paint it in the colors you like.

    Faux Rug

    • If you like the look of patterned rugs or antique rugs, you could copy a similar design onto your floorcloth. Stencils are useful for some patterns as well. Think about the style of rug you like, then look at photos of that style online or in books about rugs or antique rugs. Base your theme on a rug design you find appealing.

    Fantasy or Playtime

    • Fantasy scenes would be a welcome treat for a child's room floorcloth. Dragons and castles, fairies, mythical creatures and mermaids would all be fun to create on floorcloths. You could also design a playmat on a floorcloth, such as a city scene with streets that your child can play on with cars and other toys.

    Art for the Floor

    • Artwork would also be a fun, creative theme for a floorcloth. Who said paintings are for walls only? You could easily make a painting out of your floorcloth and can even paint the frame around it if you like. Why not create a work of art in your favorite artistic style and use it for a floorcloth? It's bound to be a conversation piece and it will also be unique to your home.
